(Maybe somebody can come up with a patch that does the right thing wrt. this stuff for all our environments.) I don't use xetex myself yet. This simple TeX package defines the \ifxetex boolean for testing whether the TeX-variant XeTeX is being used for typesetting. Also provides the \RequireXeTeX command which throws an error if XeTeX is not the engine in use.
